Mike began playing at the age of 7 under the direction of trumpet player and conductor, Hugh McGarrell. He then joined the Poynton Youth Brass band where he progressed through the ranks to the principal cornet seat. During this time he also joined the Hazel Grove Brass Band and the Cheshire Youth Brass Band in which he also progressed to principal cornet thanks to the tuition of cornet player, Les Hall.
Since then Mike has held positions at Fodens, Yorkshire Building Society and the Hepworth band. For the past 5 years he has played for the Fairey band, playing Repiano, principal and now assistant principal cornet. Mike also conducts the world famous "Acid Brass" project with Fairey band and has conducted the band at several major festivals throughout Europe.
Along with cornet Mike also plays trumpet in the newly formed classical/jazz/pop/funk fusion group "New Sense Brass" and also plays in various classical brass quintets/groups.In June 2009 saw Mike complete his BA in music, gaining a first class honours degree, but also being awarded the Harry Mortimer Performance prize.
Mike is in much demand as a player and teacher, and with the help of Geneva instruments can now take his career even further.
